The Car Manufacturing Process

With tens of millions of cars being manufactured every single year, the process has begun to take its finest form as we have entered a new age of technology. History

Although most usually think of a four-wheeled vehicle when the term “production car” is mentioned, the term actually originated on the railroad tracks. Literally a railway carriage, it shipped the production equipment for an opera company. Our more-relatable definition didn’t arrive until 1914 when the Regal motor car advertisers coined the term.

Mass-produced cars were actually introduced a decade before the term “production car” was popularised, with an Oldsmobile factory in Lansing, Michigan introduced in 1901. They implemented the still-used tactic of production-line manufacturing, which is a step-by-step building process with the vehicle traveling through multiple stations.

Though not the innovator of the production line, Henry Ford revolutionised the process, allowing his initial Ford Model T vehicles to be rolled off the line every 15 minutes. With the efficiency and consistent quality of his vehicles unmatched, the Model T has retroactively been assigned the moniker of “world’s first car”.

As opposed to the modern practice of multiple models being manufactured by one brand, originally cars were developed to fit a consumer demand. In the 1920s, Alfred P. Sloan introduced the idea of brands producing multiple cars, accommodating the different needs of their customers and continuing to produce a higher number of vehicles. Eventually this led to the industry standard of sharing parts with competing brands, keeping up with the higher demand for new cars.

Modern Car Manufacturing

The manufacturing process has stayed relatively consistent, keeping the same general methods introduced nearly a century ago. The difference, however, is the massive demand for new and improved vehicles. Manufacturers release dozens of cars a year in the modern auto market with new improvements in the various amenities being made every year. Adding voice controls, high-performance audio, integrated touch screens and applications, and obvious mechanical efficiency and performance has expanded the responsibilities of the manufacturers. Combined with the millions of cars sold every year, it is an extremely complex evolution into the current state of production vehicles.
