What to Do Before You Junk Your Car

With the cost of auto mechanic services rising, it can be a hassle to find someone to fix your car for a fair price. If your car is on its last legs, it may be easier and save you considerable time and money just to junk your car instead. But what do you do to prepare your car to be junked?

Gather Your Personal Belongings

If there is anything special in the car that you want to keep hold of, be sure that you remove these items before you call a junking company. Cars tend to collect things in them over time that we forget about, so make sure that you go over everything thoroughly. It will be next to impossible to get these things back after you sign your car over to them, so be sure to go through everything in the car and remove all important papers from the glove compartment, and give the trunk a good cleaning. Check above the visors and under the floor mats and make sure that you have all the discs removed from the CD player. This also helps improve the appearance of the car and you may be able to get more money for your car if it is properly cleaned.

Get Your Title Ready

It is important when selling your car to anybody to have a title in hand and this includes the junkyard. You must have a valid title in order to transfer ownership of your car. Even though it is possible to sell a car without a title, this is very difficult and it will save everyone involved a headache if you just have your title ready. Be careful when dealing with junkyards that do not require you to have a valid title to the car when having them haul it off. This means that you could still end up being liable for the vehicle even after it has left your premises. Have a photo ID ready and make sure the title is clear of any liens and be ready to sign it over to the junkyard when they arrive to pick up the car.

Get the Car Ready

One of the things you will need to do when selling a car to a junking company is to remove the license plates. In a lot of states, you have to mail these license plates back to the DMV in order to cancel your registration. It is also possible that you won’t be able to cancel your insurance policy until the plates are turned in as well. Also, if it is possible and the car is running, try to use up the gas that is in the tank before the tow truck gets there. Having extra liquid to drain from the car does not increase its value and will be perceived as a nuisance for the junkyard to deal with.

Once you have all of these elements in place you are ready to junk your car for cash. This will save you time and money in the long run and put money in your pocket today, so don’t hesitate to follow through.
